The company is led by British-born Rachel Costa who now lives part of the year in Italy but maintains strong links with Britain.   Fifteen years ago, Rachel Costa, BA Oxford University, MA, Ph.D- University of Michigan, USA,  who has published academic articles on language and linguistics and held courses at the University of Pisa in Italy on linguistic translation, first started providing a specialist translation service to Pisa University, in response to ever growing need by the academic staff of many different disciplines (Economics, Medicine, etc.) to communicate with the rest of the world by working from or into English.  She set up “Academic Translation”, a small business dedicated to the university world, in which she used her training in linguistics to develop a method so that translated texts would sound authentic and read like originals, whatever their field. Gone were the days of dreadful “translatorese”: doctor’s texts would now read as if they were written in the foreign language by a real doctor, a botanist’s report as if a real botanist had written the foreign text.

 Within a few years the company broadened its range of activities in response to the intensification of Anglo-Italian relations.  When Tony Blair went to Tuscany for his summer holiday shortly before the 1996 elections, Rachel Costa acted as interpreter during an interview with the now Prime Minister, conducted by a political journalist for the Rome daily newspaper Paese Sera.  As the three of them sat a on a terrace overlooking the Tuscan countryside, Rachel provided a direct line of communication between Tony Blair and the journalist.  Tony Blair described his vision of a new phase in English politics, while the journalist explained the approach of the Italian centre-left parties and sought to analyse points of similarity.

  Very soon, the burgeoning business relations between Britain and Italy stimulated ever increasing demands for translation and conference interpreting from fast-growing companies in both countries, far removed from the ivory towers of academia. It is now even more vital for such companies to have well-written translations of their business reports and product specifications – materials that would truly come across as genuine to their own customers and contacts, not untrained pen-pusher’s gobbledygook.

“What really matters”, Mrs. Costa says, “is getting ‘inside’ the text and using language to convey not only all the subtleties of meaning but the entire way of life that lies within the text” .
